Cheyney Ryan

Cheyney Ryan is the son of Jessica Cadwalader Ryan, the founder of the Oakwood School, and a graduate of its elementary school (class of ’59). He was a founding member and Senior Research Fellow of Oxford University’s Program on Ethics Law and Armed Conflict, where he helped found the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights. Prior to that he taught philosophy and law for many years at the University of Oregon. He has been a Global Ethics Fellow and Senior Fellow of the Carnegie Council for Ethics and International Affairs, and has published widely on peace, nonviolence, and human rights. Inspired by his parents, he has been a long-time political activist, including work in antipoverty programs in southeastern Kentucky, participating in civil rights activities like the 1966 “March Against Fear” in Mississippi and subsequent anti-Vietnam War actions, and working with the United Farmworkers in the 1980s and early 90s. He is married to Sandy Stein Ryan, an artist and former professor of art at Oregon State University. They have three children and ten grandchildren.
