Jim Astman
Dr. James Astman is an educational consultant for independent school leaders and boards of trustees. He served as Oakwood’s Headmaster for four decades, helping to launch the school’s signature human rights program. Throughout his tenure, he was a member of the social studies department and taught psychology to twelfth graders. Jim also taught courses in education at Stanford University, Claremont Graduate University, and the University of Rochester. He is a founding faculty member of the Oxford Consortium for Human Rights, and, from 2012 to 2023, served as a Visiting Scholar in Human Rights Education at the University of Oxford. As Adjunct Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine, Jim taught child and adolescent development for nineteen years. He has written extensively on moral development, human rights education, and dialogical pedagogy. His most recent work is on “Bridging the Divide: Dialogical Pedagogy and the Healing Arts” (Routledge, 2023). He is currently completing a book on Nurturing Goodness: promoting dignity and dialogue from cradle to classroom.
